Best Hikes in Conwy and Local Area

With all the incredible mountains on our doorstep, it seems the obvious choice is to enjoy the areas of outstanding natural landscapes surrounding Conwy and local areas. From coastal cliffs and serene lakes to rugged mountain peaks, the Conwy area offers some of the best hiking in North Wales.

Whether you’re after a short, scenic stroll or a challenging mountain adventure, there’s a hike for everyone. Lace up your boots, pack your gear, and explore the stunning landscapes that make this region a popular spot for keen walkers and hikers.

Moel Siabod via Daear Ddu Ridge

This is the best way to tackle Moel Siabod and is far more exciting than the tourist path on the other side of the mountain. However, if you have little ones, it might be best to stick to this.

To start the Daear Ddu Ridge walk, begin in Capel Curig. There is a bridge over the river, and the path is signposted next to a gate. The route is fairly obvious the whole way up until you get to the bottom of the ridge – but it shouldn’t be hard to find your way again.

After a great scramble to the summit, you’ll get an incredible 360 view of Snowdonia on a clear day, with the perfect view of Snowdon. Find the full route here.

Conwy Mountain

A relatively short but rewarding hike starting from Conwy town. The trail leads you up to Conwy Mountain, offering panoramic views of Conwy Castle, the estuary, and the Great Orme.

  • Distance: 3.5 miles (5.6 km)
  • Duration: 2-3 hours
  • Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

On a clear day, you can also see the Isle of Anglesey and Snowdonia. It’s a perfect hike if you’re short on time but want stunning scenery. During your trip to Conwy, why not take a look at the activities in Conwy and the local area, including gardens, nature reserves and woodlands to explore.

Drum, Foel Fras and Llwytmor from Llanfairfechan

What makes this walk so special is the view of the sea and the view of the mountains combined. It’s not everywhere you get to enjoy both at the same time! Luckily in North Wales, we have the chance to experience this often.

  • Distance: 13 miles (20 km)
  • Duration: 6 hours
  • Difficulty: Challenging

Start the ascent at the top of Valley Road in Llanfairfechan. Head up the steep Carreg Fawr until you get to the signpost on the Roman Road, this will point you in the right direction of Drum. Once at the summit, continue onto Foel Fras to complete your walk. You can find the full route here.

Llyn Geirionydd and Llyn Crafnant Circular

Nestled within the serene Gwydir Forest, this circular hike around two peaceful lakes offers a tranquil escape from the more rugged mountain trails. Starting at Llyn Geirionydd, the route takes you along forested paths and open moorland before reaching Llyn Crafnant, a beautiful lake surrounded by woodlands and hills.

  • Distance: 5.6 miles (9 km)
  • Duration: 3-4 hours
  • Difficulty: Moderate

This walk is perfect for those looking to combine gentle walking with stunning water and woodland scenery.

Tryfan North Ridge and Bristly Ridge

This route isn’t for the faint-hearted or the inexperienced! It could be described as the finest, if most intense day out in Britain.

The route takes you from Llyn Ogwen, up the North Ridge of Tryfan. At the top you’ll see the two famous twin rocks Adam and Eve – people jump over these to mark their victory in conquering the mountain.

Next is a partial descent down the South Ridge, but veers off to the right onto Bristly Ridge, taking you to the summit of Castell y Gwynt. Take the walk back down past Llyn Bochlwyd and you’ll be finished. Find the full route here.

  • Distance: 5.5 miles (9 km)
  • Duration: 4 hours
  • Difficulty: Challenging

The next step after all these walks is a refuel – and what better place than our outdoor space by the bowling green. Soak in the lush views of the Conwy Valley and enjoy a bite to eat from our menu, a perfect end to a perfect day.
